What to wear to your Session / Idaho photographer

Let's talk about the number one question that I get asked.

Deciding what to wear at your Session can be just and challenging as finding the perfect photographer for you. It will affect the entire look of your photos, so it is very important to choose wisely. It can seem overwhelming and stressful when thinking about what to wear but doesn't have to be. Use these tips to help you pick out the perfect outfits for you.

Choose your palette first

Pick a palette of 3-4 colors. Let this be your starting place. Think in terms of tones: blue tones, earth tones, neutrals, pastels, etc. You can also look an Pinterest or Google for some suggestions on color palettes.

Start with one person

it's easier to visualize the whole puzzle once you know what one piece looks like! Try starting with mom or daughter, since women's clothing tends to have more colors and prints.

Coordinate, but don't match

Try not to have every member of the group dress in one color, but instead pick a couple colors and choose clothes that will fit in this color scheme. For example: instead of everyone wearing a blue shirt, you could have everyone in your group dress in varying colors of white, grey, beige and blue. When thinking about colors, choose colors that compliment each other.

Accessorize

Hats, tiebacks or flowers in the hair, jewelry, etc. can make an image feel complete. Don't let the accessorize overwhelm the subject though. It should just complement them and not be center stage. Avoid big, distracting accessories.

Textures

Add some visual interest to your images with unique fabrics. Some examples: lace, knits, fur, wool.

Patterns

They are beautiful and create interest in photos. Having an Outfit in the mix that has all the colors in them looks beautiful. However, not everyone in the photo should wear patterns as it may be distracting.

Layers

Dress in layers. Layering adds dimension and depth and also allow for removing clothing if it gets warm.

In the summer? Layer your dress with a cute belt and necklace.

In the winter? cardigans, belts, necklaces, scarves, hats, blazers etc.

Characters and logos

Please skip any characters and logos on clothing for your session. They are often distracting and take away from the final image.

Steer clear of fluorescents.

Fluorescent colors tend to color cast on faces, necks and hair. They're harsh sometimes.

Classic over trendy

You know what's the worst? When you look back on photos from years ago and think, "what the heck was I wearing?!"

To avoid this heartbreak, wear classic clothes.

Try on your clothes well in advance!

Kids often outgrow clothes very fast.
